Step-by-Step Guide
- Notify Your Broker
Your designated broker must also be a member of the board you join.
If your broker is switching associations too, coordinate the transfer together.
If you’re moving to a new brokerage, ensure your license is updated with your state’s real estate department before transferring your board membership.
Contact Your Current Association
Call or email your local REALTOR® association (the one you’re currently a member of).
Ask to speak with the Membership department or Accounting department.
Submit a Written Request
All boards require a written notice or membership termination form.
You’ll typically need to include:
Your full name and license number
Brokerage name
Your intent to cancel or transfer membership
The effective date of termination
Settle Outstanding Dues or Fees
Make sure all local, state, and national REALTOR® dues are current.
If you’ve already paid annual dues, ask about "A Letter of Good Standing" to take to your new board (sometimes partially refundable or transferable).
Apply to the New Association
Contact the new REALTOR® association.
Complete their new member application and pay any applicable fees.
They’ll verify your prior membership status through the National Association of REALTORS® (NAR) database.
Confirm Transfer Completion
Once accepted, confirm that:
Your MLS access is updated (you may need to switch systems).
Your NAR, state, and local memberships are active under the new board.
